16U Girls Hard Fought Start to the 2007-2008 Season

On Saturday November 17th, the Interclub 16U girls traveled to Port Hope to compete in their first tournament of the season. Facing the very talented DRVC 15U team, the girls put up quite a challenge but were unable to come away with a win.

Durham Attack Black, who finished first in our pool also proved too much for the girls even though they came together with some incredible serves, defensive play and strong will.

The next team the girls faced; the Scarborough Falcons, displayed exceptional defense in previous matches, so the girls were well aware of what needed to be done. Unable to crack their scrappy defensive and high powered attacks in the first set, the girls incredibly overcame a 23-19 deficit in the second set with some excellent passing and phenomenal defense to pull out a very well deserved 26-24 win. A few passing errors in the third set gave the Falcons a considerable advantage, and although Interclub matched the Falcons point for point, they were unable to come away with the win.

As a result of this, the girls finished fourth in their pool, and faced the Ganaraska 16U Wolves. Four straight aces by Abi Moody and excellent net play by everyone involved, combined with some spectacular digs gave the girls an easy two set win over the Wolves.

The girls then went on to have a friendly all Interclub end to their tournament, facing the 15U/16U Interclub Girls. Although the 16U Girls took the game in two sets, it was a hard earned victory.

Mark, Mike and Aubrie thank all of the girls and their supporters, parents and friends who came out to support the team on November 17th. With clear team goals ahead for the 16U Girls, the 2007-2008 season looks very bright.

Coaches Impressed with U18 Girls Kitchener Results

An outstanding early morning win against ACTS Elites (25-18 and 25-12), and a tough 3 game loss to the Bandits during pool play left our 18U girls ranked second heading into the medal rounds. Excellent serve reception and a very well-balanced attack has University scouts asking “Who is that team in blue and black?”

After falling behind 1-0 to the Blaze the girls picked up the intensity and confidently won the next two games 25-16 and 15-10 to keep their goal of a top 5 finish alive.

The quarter-final match up that followed was the match of the tournament A very talented National Capitals team stood between Interclub and a top 4 finish. With marathon rallies and outstanding displays of both offence and defence, setter Karlee Charik ran an extremely aggressive offence and neither team wanted to let the ball hit the ground. The stands were full watching these two teams split the first 2 games and trade points up to the side change in the third. A beautiful display of volleyball played at the highest level, left both teams exhilarated and exhausted and when the dust cleared the Capitals had pulled it out 15-12 in the third.

Despite their disappointment there was still work to be done with a critical 5th/7th match at the end of a very long day. The winner of this match was guaranteed a spot in Tier 2 for the next tournament and the loser would be shuffled into the zones. A slight falter in the second game let Phenix stay alive but Interclub quickly regained the momentum and rolled out to a 5-1 lead in the shortened 3rd game. They never let Phenix back in the game capturing a 5th place finish with a 15-8 win in the third.

The coaches were very pleased with the play of all the girls and look forward to the next chance to move up the ladder into Tier 1.

14U Girls Grab Bronze at the McGregor Cup!!

Interclub's 14U Girls traveled to Burlington to compete in their second tournament of the year; the McGregor Cup. The girls displayed outstanding resilience all day, winning many close sets and coming back to win some tough 3-set matches.

The girls started the day by finishing first in their pool; defeating a very disciplined and well skilled Burlington Blaze 13U team (who ultimately made it to the final) in 3 sets and the Etobicoke Wildcats in 2 straight sets.
The athletes overall success was due to tough serving, some timely blocking and digging and a much-improved serve reception.

The girls continued on their winning ways convincingly beating the Bulrington Blaze's 14U team in 2 straight sets and earned a spot in the semi-final against the Toronto Aces. Although the girls lost to the Aces in straight sets the girls, once again, showed their resilience in the Bronze Medal match against the Scarborough Falcons (SFVC). We are proud to say that every athlete contributed in defeating SFVC in a close 3 setter to take home the Bronze Medal.

Both Ashleigh and Jeff would like to thank the parents and the athletes for their hard-work, dedication and commitment thus far this season. This weekends result outlines a promising future for our 14U girls this season.

Tournament Recap 17U Boys Provincial Cup

On December 15th, the 17U Boys headed to Whitby to play in their first
tournament of the season. After some gitters and a 25-14 loss to the
Breakers, the boys found their stride with some outstanding play in the
second set winning 25-19, then battling back to win a tight third set
15-13. A great start for a boys and a real confidence builder.

Their second match was against a very green 16U Ottawa Kangaroo's, who
our boys' dismantled easily winning 25-12, 25-17.

In their third match, Interclub played a very scrappy Pegasus team from
Kingston. After losing the first set 25-20, the boys dug deep and won a
very tight second set 27-25, then won an equally tough third set 15-13.
Winning tight sets early in the year is a great confidence boost for the
team, after being a team who has choked in the past in the 3rd set of a
match. Hopefully that's a thing of the past.

Interclub's 4th match of the day, pitted the boys against last season's
silver medalist, Durham Attack. Looking a little overwhelmed to begin
the game, the guys couldn't play with the consistency needed to beat a
very good team Durham team. Losing two close sets 25-21, 25-22.

Without the chance of playoffs to determine the fate of the team, the
boys were disappointed to find themselves headed to tier 2, but bounced
back in their next match against 17U Ottawa Kangaroos and defeated them
fairly handily with scores of 25-14, 27-25.

Their final match was against the Northumberland Breakers, a team they
beat earlier in the day, this time the boys made light work of them,
winning 25-17, 25-20.

A wonderful start to the season, with the team going 5-1, the team has
to be very pleased with their efforts. Coaches Poon and Murphy would
like to thank all the boys for their hard work up until now, and look
forward to making that next step by getting to Tier 1. We would also
like to thank all the parents for their support this weekend.

Developmental Academy - Registration Still Open

Know anyone who might want to play for Interclub one day?

The Developmental Academy is a 17 week indoor program geared towards
athletes 9-14 years of age. This program focuses on basic volleyball skills training while also allowing kids 1 game of volleyball per practice session. Learning basics early will prepare athletes for Interclub tryouts.

The Developmental academy kicks off November 14th, 2007 and runs every
Monday and Wednesday 7:00PM - 8:15PM out of St. Clements school (Young & St. Clements).

18U Girls Kick Off Season with a Bronze

Interclub started its competitive season this week-end with a pre-season tournament at Humber College. This well-run tournament for 17 and 18U girls, brought together some of the best female athletes in the province. It was the perfect chance for the team to see how it stacked up against the best.

Solid play throughout the day had Interclub ranked second coming out of pool play. A semi-final match up with last year's tier 1 champions could have gone either way, with a third game needed to decide the outcome. The girls left it all on the floor and learned first hand that they can compete with the best, leaving with a third place finish and a positive outlook for the upcoming season.

Coach Steve Turner would like to thank all the athletes for a great day and an outstanding representation of Interclub, both on and off the court.

Interclub athletes shine at Beach Nationals

Interclub is quickly emerging as one of Ontario's top ranked volleyball
clubs both indoors and on the beach. There were a number of our athletes who finished with fantastic results and most importantly made huge improvements throughout the summer months.

This past season we had four teams place top four in Canada. Colm Kenny and Will Sidgwick placed second in the 16U Boys division. Lexi Gregorio and Abbey Moody placed third in 14U girls. The Team of Alex Mingay and Alley Grand finished fourth in 16U girls. Congrulations to all of our athletes who took the time to develop their game throughout the summer.

All athletes interested in trying out for Interclub volleyball are invited to attend the first tryout at the Bishop Strachan School on September 18th.

How to tryout:

Step 1: Register for tryouts online. New athletes will be asked to create an account.

Step 2: Print off your registration and bring it to the first tryout on September 18th at Bishop Strachan School. Each athlete must have a printed registration with an order number to access tryouts. Athletes are asked to arrive at 6:45 ready to play.

Step 3: After the first tryout, look for your name posted on this Website. If your name appears, you are invited to register for the next tryout.

Tues, Sept 18th at 7:00 pm
Thurs, Sept 20th at 7:00 pm
Tues, Sept 25th at 7:00 pm

Q: Can we register for all tryouts at once?
A: No, it is the athlete’s responsibility to register after they see their name on the updated tryout list. Lists will be posted by 12:00PM on the day that follows a tryout.

Girls 18U finish fourth in Ontario Championships

Following a perfect 3-0 start on Saturday the Girls 18U (shown below enjoying the sun) were poised to medal at the Ontario Championships. Another win to start our day on Sunday was followed by a rematch with a strong Stingrays team who we beat in round-robin play the previous day. Unfortunately the tables were turned as the Stingrays, who went on to win the championship, beat us 2 straight - sending us to the bronze medal game. At the end of the day, the girls came home with a fourth place medal. Special congratulations also goes to Laura Gartenburg who was selected by the tournament coaches as an All-star for her play as libero. OVA results page

The coaches wish to congratulate the entire 18U team on a fantastic season. Both Mark and Steve are proud of each and every athlete and are honoured to have worked with such a dedecated group of women.

Interclub hosts Tier 2 Girls 17U Ontario Championships

Interclub hosts Tier 2 Girls 17U Ontario Championships

Some of the strongest 17U girls teams in the province descended upon BSS for the Ontario Championships on April 14th and 15th. Thanks for the help of all of our volunteers and Rod Humana our tournament director for helping to make this event such a success.

Following a 4 and 0 start on Saturday the 17U MR Girls came up against the Niagara Rapids in their quarter final game on Sunday morning. A hard fought battle in game 1 ended with the Rapids winning 29-27. Interclub couldn't piece it back together after that losing the second game 25-15 and falling out of medal contention. A strong win at the end of the day guided a disappointed squad to a 4 and 2 record for the tournament and a seventh place finish.

Interclub setter Nicole Triberrio was also recognized by the coaches for her outstanding play and named to the tournament All-star team.
